It’s no secret that Lewis Hamilton in Hockenheim wasn’t completely healthy. Already after qualifying, he acted weak and nothing healthy. At Mercedes, they were even prepared to put a backup racer, Esteban Ocon, in the car in case Lewis couldn't compete. After the race, the Briton admitted how bad he really was. “I have never felt so weak and sick as this weekend. It was the worst racing weekend of my life for me, ”he wrote on Instagram.
That Lewis wasn’t right was also confirmed by his boss Toto Wolff: “The whole racing weekend didn’t feel good. However, I think he did his best to be able to compete in the race. Many of us would not even sit in a race car in such a state. ” He was a little better on Sunday. “But it’s understandable that you can’t be physically at the top level if you’re sick for a few days,” Wolff explains. Because of this, Hamilton deserves tremendous respect for driving the entire racing weekend at all.
And yet, he didn’t do badly at all. He won the best starting position on Saturday, and on Sunday he led the race for a long time, and everything seemed to show that he would get it. But the changing conditions on the track contributed to what happened. “Overall, it wasn’t an easy weekend. When I was in the lead, I felt good. But apparently we weren't destined for this weekend, ”Hamilton added, stressing that his physical condition was not the reason for the mistake.
Unfortunately, he will not have much time to recover, because the next race for the Hungarian Grand Prix is already on the agenda this weekend. Until then, however, he plans to get a fair rest and recover so that the racing weekend at the Hungaroring starts as healthy as possible.
And one more thing: Since Hamilton was sick in Hockenheim, we probably won’t see much of him in the next episode of the second season of the Netflix documentary about F1. They also filmed at Mercedes for the first time last weekend, but Hamilton reveals: “I probably won’t be seen much because I’ve been sick all along. I will not allow them to show me sick. ”
