Renault and McLaren: New engines and penalties

Hülkenberg, Ricciardo, Sainz and Norris can already prepare for the penalty. For Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul said: “We already know that we will have to come to terms with being penalized after the summer break. This was predicted as early as the start of the season when Sainz had a malfunction on the MGU-K unit that led to flames and loss of the entire engine. With that, Sainz fell out of the rhythm of changing components. ” As is known, three internal combustion engines, three MGU-H units, three turbochargers, but only one MGU-K unit, two batteries and two control units are allowed this year.

“Penalties will come when we bring the latest engine upgrade namely the c-version. At the moment, I do not want to confirm when exactly these new power units will be introduced, but we will have to digest the penalties for additional engine performance. ” The new power unit is announced for a racing weekend in Belgium or a week later in Italy.

The usual approach is that one Renault racer and McLaren will get a fresh engine in Belgium and the other two in Italy. What they want to prevent urgently, however, is that the penalty for adding a city surcharge for changing the engine would occur in Singapore, where it is almost impossible to overtake.

Abiteboul adds: “I can't confirm the date yet because the engines are still under construction. But then we should end the season without additional penalties. At the same time, our racers have engines of different specifications, namely A and B. We use them in a targeted manner, depending on the track plan and ambient temperatures. ”

Although there was heavy smoke from Daniel Ricciard's engine at the race in Hockenheim, the Australian will be able to continue using this engine. “It was just a crack in the exhaust, it led to a hydraulic leak, which is why there is so much smoke. It had nothing to do with the engine. ”
