Bernd Mayländer introduced us to his safety car

Mercedes already takes care of the safety of racers and fans with its safety cars since 1996, but for Mayländer, when he is called by race control, there is always quite a bit hard to catch a leading race car and drive on the track in such a way that the safety car has as little effect as possible on the normal course of the race.

The first Mercedes safety car was the AMG C36 in Spa-Francorchamps in 1996.

Mercedes-AMG GT R, used in the F1 as a safety car, is equipped with electronics that allow monitoring of telemetry, with which engineers get useful data from the track itself. They are, of course, the most visible part of a safety car orange warning lights on the roof, and in the middle of them is an LED compartment with an additional system that allows the display of warning flags to racers, who also see the warnings on their steering wheels. An additional antenna at the rear of the vehicle allows Mayländer to communicate with the competition management.

Inside, everything is quite similar to the production model, with the difference that the driver and passenger in the safety car have two additional screens, on which they can monitor the course of the race, times and warnings regarding possible accidents. An additional warning follows if an accident occurs in which the racer is exposed more than 20 G acceleration. An additional button is used to adjust the anti-slip system of the drive wheels, and with the buttons on the roof, the Mayländer switches the warning lights on the roof on and off.

All the technology is hidden in the trunk of the car, and for better visibility it has safety AMG GT R an additional camera built into the rear, which gives the driver of the safety car good visibility to the rear. More about the safety car in the attached video.
