Do carbon brakes really endanger the health of racers?

During the race in Singapore many media outlets have reported on smog, which is expected to spread even more over the East Asian metropolis during the race than usual. Caring for the health of racers is one of the priorities of the organization, which is the latter advised against running outdoors precisely because of the Singapore smog.

When braking, carbon brakes emit dust into the surroundings, for which it is not entirely clear to what extent it endangers the health of racers.

Smog is also encountered by racers in Shanghai, before which it was also famous for the Indian Grand Prix, but the fact remains that racers are exposed to polluted air at every race, this is not actually talked about publicly. The main problem is black dust emitted by carbon brakes when braking »I have black soot in my nose after every race, ” he says Valtteri Bottas.

How do the brakes in F1 work?

The Finn points out that the problem is not the dust from his car: "You're most exposed to dust when another car is driving in front of you, especially if you're in a convoy." Even his teammate Lewis Hamilton has already pointed out the possible harmful effects of inhaling dust emitted by carbon brakes. It is not yet clear what effects and consequences this dust actually has on the health of the racers, but for now it does not seem that any important decision will be made on this topic any time soon. Theoretically, it would otherwise be easiest to incorporate some kind into helmets air filter, which would filter the air to the racer's nose or use of conventional brakes, who have, of course, been "grazing" in Formula 1 for some time.
