Andrew SHOVLIN (Mercedes): What FANS can expect in the 2022 season

Teams slowly one after another representing their own new race cars, which occurred under the biggest policy changes in the last 40 years. Ross Brawn, the sports boss of Formula 1, is then toasted this new generation of race cars to show off the stars of the royal motorsport class better sport.

Brown namely, he believes he will be able to race - thanks less sensitive aerodynamics, with race cars that vacuum generate primarily over the bottom and not mostly s front and rear wings - follow the competitor in front of you better and closer. He also believes that the teams will get closer in terms of performance. “On a good day, the midfield team must be able to outwit and beat a top team," so Brown, who is leaving the position of Formula 1 sports boss after the end of this season.

Will these goals be achieved?

Andrew Shovlin, head of engineers in the world champion team Mercedes Benz, gives fans hope. The Briton says: "There is a lot of work behind this new policy. Formula 1 and FIA technicians have been thinking a lot about how the car could generate as few unwanted air vortices as possible (so-called dirty air, op. Cit.). And it’s basically very simple. The closer a racer gets to a competitor in front of him, the more likely he is to attack it." Shovlin considers that a big difference will be made by the fact on which lane they will be driving.

"In Monaco, for example, the new aerodynamics will have no effect when it comes to overtaking. The plains there are too short and the trail too narrow. It has never been easy in Monaco to overtake a competitor and will remain so in the future. But on many other tracks, it will really prove that the race cars will be closer to each other. Racers will put rivals under a lot of pressure. Undercut as a strategic weapon will become even more important,”So engineer Mercedesa.

Shovlin continues: “I estimate that we will get the first test in terms of overtaking in the first test in Spain and then even more in the second test in Bahrain. As for the real competitiveness of individual teams, it is still true that we will see this in reality only when the lights at the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix go out."
