Further postponement of the Trinity project. VW Group CEO Oliver Blume has again postponed the electric car project, which was initially planned for 2026, then moved to 2028. Now there is talk of 2032.
The model, based on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), will be postponed to 2032, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported, which is summarized by n-tv.de due to the paywall. The reason for this is that the electric Golf is said to be the first model to be based on the SSP. This car is expected to be launched in 2028 or 2029. The concern also plans to introduce an improved version of the best-selling VW ID.2026 electric model in 4, which will be based on an improved version of the well-known Modular Electric Tool (MEB).
Therefore, the model with the working name Trinity is no longer needed before 2030, the newspaper reported, citing an internal VW document. VW also seems to be expecting more from its investment in the e-Golf and ID.4. Other reasons include weak demand for e-cars and VW's software problems, which are still unresolved, one of the inside sources told the Handelsblatt newspaper.
Herbert Diess and brand boss Ralf Brandstätter announced the model for 2021. The first teaser image with the silhouette showed the crossover with a steeply sloping rear. At the 'New Auto' event in July 2021, graphics were shown that announced the 2026 project.
Diess's successor, Oliver Blume, shortly after taking office in September 2022, postponed the project by two years, i.e. first to 2028. One of the reasons was probably the software, which was not expected to be ready until 2026. To save costs, Blume canceled also the construction of a separate Trinity plant on a green site. Instead, the Trinity is to be built in Zwickau, while the SSP-based electric Golf is to ensure capacity utilization in Wolfsburg, it was said a year ago.
