In January, the Stellantis Group announced its intention to equip medium-sized and large vans with fuel cell systems in the future. The group's large vans also include cars such as the Fiat Ducato. The Opel Movano model should also be equipped with a hydrogen drive. The Rüsselsheim-based brand has now unveiled the Opel Movano Hydrogen at the IAA in Hannover.
The new version of the Opel Movano Electric with a 110 kWh battery has a range of 420 km. The hydrogen version has a longer range of 500 km, although it is not significantly greater. One of the advantages, however, is that gas tanks can be filled in less than five minutes. How much hydrogen the two tanks can hold has not been disclosed. The car combines a hydrogen fuel cell system with an 11 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor with 110 kW and 410 newton meters of torque. This means that a significantly weaker drive is installed than in the battery-electric version with a power of 200 kW. Opel does not disclose how much power the fuel cell assembly provides.
The battery helps with acceleration. Opel described it as a "plug-in battery" in its preview report from early September, which led us to conclude that it can be charged. This name was not repeated in the final forecast. It is only stated that it can be charged with recuperation. The volume of the luggage compartment of the Movano Hydrogen is the same as that of other versions of the Movano. Depending on the version, it is up to 13 cubic meters (Movano L3H2) or even up to 17m3 (L4H3). Payload is up to 1.370 kg.
Stellantis medium-sized vans, such as the Opel Vivaro Hydrogen, use a 100 kW electric motor, 45 kW fuel cells and 11 kWh battery. The Vivaro electric vehicle's drive battery is replaced by three 700-bar hydrogen tanks under the floor. Opel does not reveal how many kilograms of hydrogen they contain in the press release, but it is 4,4 kilograms for the identical Expert-e Hydrogen model. This should enable a 400 kilometer journey.
Electric Opel Movano
In addition to the hydrogen-powered Movan, Opel also presented the new Combo Electric at the IAA Transportation fair, which now offers a range of 354 km, which is 80 km more than its predecessor. Also on display is the Opel Rocks Electric with Kargo-Kit, which Opel recommends for delivering packages, pizzas or medicine in the city.
