Citroën CX: Icon of comfort and innovation celebrates 50 years

It succeeded the legendary DS model and continued Citroën's tradition of innovation and comfort. It is interesting that part of the history of this car is also closely connected with Slovenia. The Citroen CX was known for its aerodynamic shape with a low drag coefficient (0,36), hydropneumatic suspension that provided an extremely comfortable ride, and the unique DIRAVI steering wheel with one lever. Inside, the CX offered a spacious cabin with a futuristic dashboard and innovative features such as concave gauges and finger controls.

During its 17-year production run, the CX was offered in a variety of body styles, including the classic saloon, the practical Break station wagon and the prestigious long-wheelbase Prestige saloon. It is particularly interesting that some of these versions, especially station wagons, were also assembled in Slovenia, at the CIMOS factory in Koper. This was an important event for the Slovenian automotive industry and contributed to the visibility of the Citroën CX in Slovenia.

The range of engines included petrol and diesel units, including a turbo petrol engine in the GTi Turbo sports version. Due to its spaciousness, comfort and reliability, the CX Break was also popular as an ambulance, both in Slovenia and elsewhere in Europe. The hydropneumatic suspension ensured a comfortable ride even on bad roads, which was crucial for transporting patients.

The CX was popular with politicians, businessmen and anyone who valued comfort, innovation and uniqueness. It was one of the most advanced cars on the market in its day and won many awards, including the title of European Car of the Year in 1975.

The CX model was replaced in 1991 by the more modern XM. Today, the CX is considered a cult car and is popular with collectors and classic car enthusiasts. His legacy lives on in Citroën models, which are still renowned for their comfort and innovative technologies. In Slovenia, however, the CX maintains a special place in the history of motoring, as part of its production was closely linked to our country.
