Toyota makes the GR86 rally car with 304 hp and four-wheel drive

As usual, Toyota made a big effort at SEMA. We saw the 4Runner TRD Surf, Land Cruiser Rox and a few other off-road vehicles that were in Las Vegas. The company has returned to the glory of the 86s with the rally-inspired GRXNUMX concept.

The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept (its full name) was unveiled at the SEMA show. It is equipped with all-wheel drive and a more powerful turbo engine, as well as a full Castrol-style rally exterior with red fenders, white wheels and a race-ready cabin with minimal interior trim. It has Sparco racing seats, a Sparco steering wheel, a roll cage... and that's it.

Under the hood is the 1,6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine from the GR Corolla model. It makes 304 hp and 370 Nm of torque, the same as the standard GR Corolla model, but Toyota claims it can do even more. The photos show a sequential racing gearbox. So there's no manual transmission, but at least the GR86 concept uses Corolla's all-wheel drive system.

However, equipping the GR86 with the engine and four-wheel drive of the GR Corolla was no easy task. Engineers had to adapt the GR86 chassis to accommodate the larger, transversely mounted engine with a customized subframe and engine mounts. Due to the installation of a spacious four-wheel drive, the hubs, spindles and axles of the Corolla had to be added to transfer power to the front wheels.

The GR86 also borrowed the rear differential and matching housing from the GR Corolla model, thus retaining the factory gearing. It also has stylish mid-mounted twin tailpipes that just look cool. Of course you can't buy it. The complexity of the project suggests that Toyota has no plans to build this concept car.
