In the 3s, BMW unveiled the M3 prototype, which went down in history. It was the first MXNUMX pick-up, a functional concept car that was on display at fairs and exhibitions for a long time, but never hit the roads outside BMW Motorsport's headquarters in Garching near Munich.
As the starting point for this special project, the engineers chose the two-door E30 series, the rear of which was cut off and replaced with an aluminum luggage compartment. But the technology is different. Under the hood, a real M-section engine was installed from the start, namely the 2,0-liter 192 hp engine from the M3 model, which was sold in Italy and Portugal, where this solution was more suitable due to volume taxation from the 2,3 S14 with about 200 hp (although it was also installed later).
But what was the purpose of this particular project? According to various explanations given by the company over the last 30 years, this particular high-speed transporter was intended to transport components and parts in the sports department factory.

In 2012, after 26 years of "factory work" for tests and trials, the prototype was retired and made way for the new BMW M3 pick-up, this time based on the E92 model introduced in 2011.
The latter was driven several times by the Bavarian manufacturer without camouflage around the Nürburgring to test the reactions of the public and fans.
