Lotus postponed the arrival date of its electric sports car

The delay was due to a slower-than-expected transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in the market. Therefore, the company is considering extending the production cycle of the Emira model and possibly introducing a hybrid version.

While the exact hybrid configuration remains sketchy, Lotus has indicated interest in plug-in hybrids and range-extender vehicles. The latest technology, known as 'hyperhybrid', uses the petrol engine as a generator to charge the battery and can directly power the car at higher speeds.

The Emira currently has two engines available: a 2,0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from AMG and a 3,5-liter turbocharged V6 from Toyota. Both engines already have existing hybrid applications in other vehicles, which makes the possibility of a hybrid Emira all the more likely.

While the hybrid Emira would depart from Lotus' traditional emphasis on lightweight design, it might be necessary to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations. This approach could also appeal to Lotus customers who prefer an internal combustion engine in addition to an electric drivetrain.

In addition to the electric sports car, Lotus has also postponed the launch of its Type 134 electric SUV, originally scheduled for 2025. This decision is based on market analysis and concerns about demand for a smaller electric SUV.
