Lexus has announced the ES model, which is set to become their global flagship. What this means for the aging LS sedan is unknown.
The current-generation Lexus ES is nearing the end of its seven-year sales cycle, despite recent updates, and Lexus is already preparing to unveil the eighth-generation model at the Shanghai Motor Show, which kicks off next week. According to the teaser, the new ES will borrow some of its curves and lighting from the RZ crossover.
Lexus is pitching the new ES as a “global flagship model,” raising questions about the future of the larger LS sedan. The company is hinting at advanced electrification technologies, suggesting hybrid powertrains and perhaps the possibility of a plug-in hybrid.
The marketing team promises minimal noise and maximum ride comfort, suggesting a more insulated cabin and possibly the option of air suspension. Given that the Chinese market favors more rear legroom, we can expect an increased wheelbase.

The new Lexus ES is expected to launch first in China, with other markets following later, most likely next year. It is still unclear whether the new ES will indirectly replace the aging LS model.
