The 1979 Ford Mustang Daytona concept, one of only five built, is now for sale.
Developed by Cars and Concepts and shown at several major auto shows, the concept offered a glimpse into the possible design directions for the then-new Fox Body Mustang. Its custom bodywork, dressed in a distinctive orange-red hue, appears more elegant than the production model. Notable exterior features include blacked-out headlight covers with an engraved Mustang logo, a unique grille, wire wheels and a t-top roof.

Under the hood of the Daytona concept is the factory 5,0-liter Fox Body V-8 engine, mated to a four-speed manual transmission, but there’s no word on whether the powertrain has undergone any changes. The suspension has also been slightly modified for use in the concept vehicle. Inside, the cabin is done in an all-brown hue, with leather bucket seats, a leather steering wheel, an AM/FM radio, and a “Daytona” logo on the dashboard.

After the tour ended, the concept was stored at the Henry Ford Museum for two decades before being restored and recognized with an Award of Excellence at the 2024 Cincinnati Concours d'Elegance. Now, this rare piece of Mustang history will be auctioned at the 2025 Mecum Indy event, starting May 15, and is expected to fetch between $74.000 and $92.500.
