Independent study presents the Nissan 200SX as a modern classic with a surprising powertrain.
The Nissan 500SX is a stunning digital concept by designer Valentin Komkov, a modern iteration of the popular Nissan 200SX. The project highlights the appeal of reviving cult classics, especially when independent designers are free from corporate constraints. Komkov, a Prague-based designer, drew inspiration from the timeless silhouette of Nissan’s S13 generation, seeking to add a modern twist to the formula.

The 500SX's design masterfully combines original curves with a fresh perspective. It retains iconic elements of the 200SX, such as the pop-up headlights and distinctive curved rear window. But the bodywork is significantly more sculpted, with pronounced fenders that create a sleek, athletic silhouette. The rear features a slim full-width LED strip, a ducktail spoiler and a minimalist bumper with four exhaust pipes. Despite being an independent study, it fits seamlessly into Nissan's current aesthetic.
Beneath the charming digital exterior lies an unexpected element – a Toyota-sourced engine. Instead of a Nissan powertrain, Komkov opted for the legendary 3,0-liter 2JZ inline-six from the Mk4 Supra. Renowned for its incredible tuning potential, this engine is a bold but fitting choice for this concept car. While no specific details are given about power or torque output, the concept clearly suggests a combination of a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive.

While the 500SX concept is compelling, it doesn’t fit with Nissan’s previous thinking about a smaller, more affordable sports car below the Z and GT-R models, which would likely include some degree of electrification. With its high-performance powertrain and premium design, the 500SX leans more towards a digital grand tourer than an entry-level model. This project remains a “what if” and will, of course, be rendered in pixels, unencumbered by budgets or corporate strategies. Nevertheless, it demonstrates how enthusiasts continue to find the strength to keep the spirit of today’s iconic cars alive.
