Ford makes new electric attempt at Pikes Peak record

Ford is preparing a new electric attack on Pikes Peak with the potent Mustang Mach-E.

Ford will once again take on the legendary Pikes Peak climb with a new, heavily modified electric Super Mustang Mach-E. After an electric van and pickup truck in previous years, the Blue Oval is stepping up its pursuit of the fastest time with a radically redesigned Mach-E. While details about the racer are still being released, the vehicle clearly takes the styling cues of the production Mustang Mach-E, with a significantly lowered design and extreme aerodynamic modifications.

The Super Mustang Mach-E sports an extravagant rear wing and an equally aggressive rear diffuser. These massive aerodynamic elements surround the electric crossover’s signature three-piece taillights and a perforated center section that fills the space between the two lights. The front of the car is equally dramatic, featuring a massive front bumper that echoes the boldness of the rear end, giving the vehicle a much lower and wider appearance than the production model. It’s highly likely that this Super EV will use the Mustang Mach-E body mounted on a dedicated racing chassis, a strategy Ford has already used for its other “Super” electric vehicles.

Ford has confirmed that this new electric vehicle can generate an incredible 2.778 kilograms of downforce, surpassing its predecessors. For comparison, the SuperVan 4.2 generated 1996 kg of downforce, and the SuperTruck generated 2722 kg. Although power figures for the Super Mach-E have not yet been released, it is expected to have around 1044 kW (1400 hp) and will likely be equipped with three electric motors, in line with previous Ford Super EV models.

The Pikes Peak Hillclimb is scheduled for June 22. Ford set a new record when it competed with the SuperVan, beating the previous record by nearly 37 seconds. Ford did not say whether it plans to compete elsewhere this year with the Super Mustang Mach-E.
