Concept preview hints at WRX successor

Subaru has announced a major reveal for performance car enthusiasts with a new prototype that will premiere at the domestic mobility show at the end of October this year.

This model, potentially a new generation of WRX, will feature an advanced four-wheel drive system derived from its Super Taikyu racing series and a newly developed boxer engine. The company's chief technology officer Tetsuo Fujinuki confirmed the company's commitment to "attractive cars" based on the advantages of four-wheel drive, promising the most advanced version yet in the future.

The teaser image, which is a bit blurry, shows an aggressive design with a large grille, pronounced sill, a hood with a vent and wide fenders, suggesting a strong focus on maximum performance. This is in line with a report from Japanese website Car Watch, which states that the prototype could pave the way for an STI version. Subaru wants to keep its signature boxer engine at the heart of its identity and adapt it to future regulations.

Fujinuki also confirmed the development of a next-generation boxer engine. While he hasn't yet revealed details about displacement or number of cylinders, the engine is said to be compatible with carbon-neutral E20 fuel and is said to strongly hint at hybrid assistance. This strategy fits in with Subaru, Toyota and Mazda's joint announcement in May 2024, which focuses on multi-pronged approaches to maintaining the performance of internal combustion engines through electrification and alternative fuels.

The current Subaru WRX was introduced in 2021, while the top-of-the-line STI S210, limited to 500 units for Japan, was unveiled earlier this year. More details about the new prototype and the boxer engine's development are expected when the Japanese Motor Show opens on October 30.
