Skoda announces the Fabia 130 model. What's behind it?

Škoda recently released a video that hints at the upcoming premiere of the Fabia sports model with the “130” designation, which will take place on October 7, 2025. The designation evokes memories of the legendary Škoda 130 RS model from the 1970s, which is considered one of the brand's most successful rally and racing cars.

The Škoda 130 RS, also known as the "Porsche of the Eastern Bloc", was introduced in 1975 and achieved great success in international motor racing. With a 1,3-liter DOHC engine and a weight of just 710 kg, it was lightweight with impressive performance. Among other things, it won its class at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1977 and secured the title in the European Touring Car Championship in 1981.

The trailer video for the new Fabia 130 shows a sporty compact car with expressive lines and a dynamic appearance. But what is behind it? A prototype with sporty elements recently sparked speculation that Skoda may be adapting the 207 hp VW Polo GTI for its own. The Fabia and Polo share the same technical basis, so such a Fabia RS would certainly be feasible.

The CO2 emissions of such a vehicle speak against this. The current Polo GTI emits 149 grams per kilometer. Does Škoda want to burden its balance sheet with this? Especially since the small electric car Epiq will be included in the range from 2026. Internal combustion engines are therefore clearly not the focus of the brand.

In addition to the 50th anniversary of the 130 RS, the number “130” refers to this year’s company anniversary: Škoda Auto was founded in 1895 as a bicycle manufacturer under the name Laurin & Klement by Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement. The company began producing cars in 1905. In 1925, the company, weakened by the First World War, was taken over by the Škoda engineering group.

Installing the 130 hp EA 211 evo engine, which is used in the Golf 8 until the beginning of 2024, would be appropriate. However, the 150 hp evo2 engine is now used there, also in the current Fabia. A year ago, the 1.5 Rally2 engine with 190 hp was only available for the Spanish market. Limited to 100 units. So more power would be possible. Nevertheless, we expect more optics. But let's wait and see what Skoda will present in a week.
