Google Maps got an AI brain

Gemini AI integration turns your navigation into a conversational companion.

Google Maps is getting a major upgrade with the integration of Gemini AI, starting with landmark-based navigation. Instead of just distances like “turn in 500 meters,” the app will now provide more intuitive directions, like “turn right for Thai Siam.” The feature is powered by Gemini, which analyzes 250 million locations and Street View imagery, with the goal of keeping drivers’ eyes on the road, not the screen.

The Gemini integration also brings a powerful conversational assistant. Users can ask complex questions in natural language, such as searching for affordable vegan restaurants along the way or checking for parking availability at their destination. This “local expert” combines Google Maps data with online information and allows users to easily report traffic incidents using their voice. The feature is rolling out to Android and iOS, with support for Android Auto planned.

In addition to active navigation, Google Maps will now provide proactive driving alerts that alert users to traffic jams or accidents ahead, even if they don’t have a destination set. The Lens feature within Maps is also being upgraded with Gemini; users can point their camera at buildings or businesses to identify them and ask them questions, such as “What’s the vibe like inside?” or what a restaurant’s specialties are, and receive concise and helpful answers.
