Volkswagen will end production of the Touareg with an internal combustion engine in 2026. To mark the end of the model series, the manufacturer is presenting a special model called the “Touareg Final Edition.” This edition can be ordered until the end of March 2026, and prices for it start at 75.025 euros in Germany.
After more than two decades, the era of the large SUV is coming to an end, which has been considered a technological pioneer and brand image bearer since its launch in 2002. Together with the Phaeton luxury sedan, the Touareg marked Volkswagen's entry into the premium segment.
VW Touareg "Final Edition"

The edition model has special features inside and out. The rear door windows feature laser-engraved “Final Edition” lettering, which is also embossed into the leather gearshift paddles. From the “Elegance” equipment line onwards, multi-coloured ambient lighting is standard. The designation also appears on the illuminated trim on the dashboard and on the illuminated door sill panels.

The current top-of-the-range Touareg R eHybrid will remain the brand's most powerful vehicle until the end of production. The plug-in hybrid combines an electric motor with a V6 petrol engine. The weighted combined energy consumption is 15,2-14,8 kWh/100 km and 6,0-5,2 l/100 km, with CO₂ emissions of 136-119 g/km. To date, the Touareg has been sold more than 1,2 million times in 39 countries.
First generation (2002-2009)

With the introduction of the first Touareg in 2002, Volkswagen set new standards in the SUV segment. The technical highlights were the electromechanical roll stabilization and the CDC air suspension with six levels. The Touareg was able to overcome water crossings up to 58 centimeters deep and slopes up to 45 degrees. The top-of-the-line V10 TDI had 230 kW (313 hp) and 750 Nm of torque. In August 2004, VW introduced the top-of-the-line W12 with 331 kW (450 hp). With 471.000 units sold, the first Touareg became one of the most successful luxury SUVs of its time.
Second generation (2010-2018)

The successor was longer and wider and offered more comfort. The first Volkswagen hybrid drive was new: the 3.0 V6 TSI Hybrid with a system output of 279 kW (380 hp) and 580 Nm of torque. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds and reached a top speed of 240 km/h. Average fuel consumption was 8,2 liters. Numerous assistance systems improved safety and comfort while driving. A total of around 483.000 vehicles of this generation were sold.
Third generation (since 2018)

With aluminum body parts and modern lines, the Touareg has become lighter and more dynamic. The model is characterized by a digital cockpit, comprehensive connectivity and new assistance systems. Active roll stabilization operates up to 400 times per second and ensures precise handling. In 2020, the Touareg R, a plug-in hybrid with 340 kW (462 hp) and 700 Nm of torque, followed. To date, more than 265.000 units of the third generation have been produced.
The model is still considered a comfortable touring vehicle and a powerful towing vehicle with a towing capacity of up to 3,5 tons. With the “Touareg Final Edition”, Volkswagen is closing an important chapter in the history of its model – before the successor will be fully electric.
