This Old Porsche 911 Is Actually a Modern 964

Since 2016, British company Theon Design has been exploring how classic the Porsche 911 964 series (from 1988) can look. Now they have presented their latest one-off: a custom-built Porsche 911 Coupé with carbon bodywork, built for a client in the UK.

The vehicle is painted in the classic Porsche color "Medium Ivory" and is based on the 911 series 964. The air-cooled sports car is powered by a 4,0-liter boxer engine with 420 hp. With a vehicle weight of around 1.150 kilograms, the power-to-weight ratio is even higher than that of the current Porsche 992 GT3 RS.

The project was developed in close collaboration with the client and follows a deliberately reduced approach. The aim was to create a timeless, road-going 911 with a classic look whose performance is only apparent at a second glance. Despite its restrained appearance, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (0–96 km/h) in less than four seconds and, according to the creators, offers a direct, analogue driving experience.

Like all Theon Design vehicles, this model was created over 18 months at the company’s headquarters in Britain’s “Motorsport Valley”. The starting point was a completely stripped-down 964 body, which was stripped down to its bare structure, re-measured and reinforced throughout. Engineers fully welded the body to significantly increase torsional rigidity. The chassis was then given a lightweight carbon body designed by co-founder Adam Hawley, who previously worked as a designer for BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and Lotus.

The body panels were painted in “Medium Ivory” in a 20-step paint process lasting over 300 hours and featuring white Grand Prix stripes. The full-length paint protection film (PPF) allows for unlimited use. Additional details include champagne-colored accents on the wheels, mirrors and light rings, polished chrome elements and copper-brown brake calipers. These work with the Porsche 993 RS-specification brake system and are mounted behind 17-inch Fuchs wheels in a three-piece design.

The air-cooled 4,0-liter boxer engine develops 420 hp at 7.600 rpm and delivers 439 Nm of torque. Open intakes provide direct throttle response and a suction sound reminiscent of the historic RSR racers. A modern ignition system, individual throttle valves and a switchable exhaust system complete the concept. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 993-RS-specification six-speed manual transmission.

The chassis and settings have been specifically tailored to British roads. Softer springs and a semi-active TracTive damper system with five-stage adjustment, controlled by a rotary knob on the steering column, are used. The aim is a wide range of application between long-distance comfort and precise driving dynamics.

The interior is largely made of carbon fiber and trimmed with tobacco nubuck leather and contrasting liquorice leather. Recaro CS seats, a reduced rear section with storage space, an individually configured Audison audio system and aluminum controls complete the interior.

Prices for individual Theon Design products start at £420.000 (approximately €485.000) for a coupe. The price does not include the donor vehicle, transport and local taxes. Each vehicle is unique and is created in close collaboration with the respective customer.
