Recalls in the automotive world usually deal with critical problems such as brake failures, airbag defects or even engine problems, but this time Ferrari found itself in a much more unusual predicament.
Maranello had to recall 80 examples of its new 12Cilindri model because their windows were simply too dark. The problem was discovered on March 16, 2026, during a pre-delivery inspection of the vehicles, when it was discovered that the black rear and side windows did not meet US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
According to documents filed with the US NHTSA, the windows on the twelve-cylinder engines involved do not meet the required 70% light transmission. FMVSS regulation No. 205 is clear: the glass must allow the driver sufficient outward visibility, otherwise the risk of an accident increases significantly. Ferrari explained that the error was due to an internal lapse in determining the technical specifications for the US market, where the rules on tinting are clearly stricter than the Italian design preferences.
The solution to this aesthetic-safety dilemma is fortunately quite simple. Ferrari will replace the problematic parts on all affected vehicles with new glass that meets all legal standards, free of charge. All known owners will be informed by May 15, when they will have to contact an authorized dealer. The Italian manufacturer has also promised to reimburse the costs of those rare individuals who may have replaced the glass at their own expense before the official notification of the recall.
