50 years of the Citroën 2CV Spot

The limited edition of the legendary "Spačka", which started the trend of special editions in 1976 with its bold orange and white combination, celebrates its half-century this year.

In 1976, Citroën launched the limited edition 2CV Spot, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year and remains a revered icon in the world of vintage cars. The idea to refresh the then somewhat outdated but still extremely popular car was born in the studio of designer Serge Gevin. They chose a bold color combination of “Orange Ténéré” and “Blanc Meije”, complemented by a striped pattern on the canvas roof and vibrant orange details in the interior. With this relaxed, almost beachy look, Citroën created a real sensation and laid the foundation for future successful special series, such as the later very popular Charleston model.

The technical basis of the Spot model was the standard Citroën 2CV 4, powered by a two-cylinder engine with a displacement of 435 cubic centimeters. This unit developed 18 kW (24 hp) of power and 39 Nm of torque, which was enough for a top speed of just over 100 km/h, while the average fuel consumption was a solid 5,4 l/100 km. In some markets, such as Great Britain and Switzerland, the car was also available with a more powerful engine from the 2CV 6 version. At the official presentation on April 10, 1976, the vehicle was available for 13.600 French francs at the time, which would be approximately €13.890 today, taking inflation into account, and all 1.800 examples produced were sold out in just a few days due to the exceptional interest.

Today, half a century after its launch, the Citroën 2CV Spot has a solid and important place among vintage car collectors. In its anniversary year, this special model will be the center of attention at numerous automotive events across Europe, with organizations such as L'Aventure Citroën also taking care of it. We also expect the Spot to be the star of this year's big 2CV owners' meeting in Villiers-sur-Loir, France, where thousands of examples are sure to be on display. It will also be given special attention at the renowned classic car fair Epoqu'auto in Lyon, where its distinctive orange and white silhouette will even adorn the event's official posters.
