Ford enters new decade with development offensive

Ford is preparing a major overhaul of its model range and restructuring of the company with a strong focus on advanced electrification.

Ford is preparing one of the most extensive product redesigns in its history, planning to refresh 70 percent of its global offering and 80 percent of its North American model lineup by 2029. To achieve these goals, it has created a new internal Product Creation and Industrialization department, led by Kumar Galhotra, which will combine design, electric vehicle development, software and industrial systems. The reorganization aims to optimize the business and achieve an 8 percent adjusted operating margin (EBIT) by 2029, and Doug Field, the company's key figure in developing connected and electric vehicles, is leaving the company.

The upcoming lineup will include a new generation of the popular F-150 and F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks, as well as an all-new mid-size pickup truck. The latter will be built on a new electric vehicle (UEV) platform developed by a dedicated in-house team. The UEV platform focuses heavily on weight reduction and manufacturing simplicity through the use of large unicasting, while also delivering highly efficient powertrains, a fully zoned electrical architecture, and advanced proprietary software with driver assistance systems.

As part of this transformation, Ford expects nearly 90 percent of its global models to be available with electrified powertrains by 2030. This strategy will offer customers a wide range of powertrain options, including hybrids, extended-range electric vehicles and all-electric models. The highly efficient electric motors developed for the new UEV platform will also directly benefit upcoming hybrid models, as Ford aims to deliver a broad portfolio of high-quality, software-enabled and cost-effective vehicles for the future within a few years.
