The return of the Chevrolet Sonic

General Motors is reviving the Sonic name in Brazil in the form of a compact SUV coupe, but it will be available exclusively in the South American market.

The Chevrolet Sonic is officially back, but not as a classic hatchback, but as a modern subcompact crossover with an attractive sloping roofline. General Motors has introduced this new SUV coupe to the Brazilian market, which clearly draws design inspiration from existing models such as the Equinox and Trax. The new model is designed exclusively for the South American market, where it will fill the gap between the Onix Activ and Tracker models and strategically strengthen the offering in the most popular automotive segment in the region.

In terms of powertrain, the manufacturer is looking to attract new customers with an advanced and efficient hybrid package. The new Sonic is expected to be equipped with a 48-volt flex-fuel mild hybrid system, which will be paired with 1,2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine. This modern assembly, which the brand is already successfully introducing in the Tracker and Montana models, is estimated to develop a power of around 98 kW (133 HP) and offered 210 Nm of torque. Such a configuration promises a lively ride and favorable fuel consumption, which would presumably be around 6,0 l / 100km.

Despite the attractive design and affordable estimated starting price of around 18.000 euros, but this crossover will not hit American or European roads. Although the Sonic could successfully compete in the small car class with its fuel economy and offer a cheaper gasoline alternative to the Trax and electric Bolt, there are currently no plans for its global expansion. American and European buyers who would be happy to accept an affordable and useful small car are left to look at photos of the exclusive South American product.
