In 1999, a car that clearly came at the wrong time hit the market. The Audi A2 was an aerodynamic ball on wheels that seems much more in line with today's SUV and crossover trend than it was then. In 2026, a second attempt will be launched in Ingolstadt under the same name.
The Audi A2 e-tron has been around for a while. It initially appeared as a prototype, but Audi only officially confirmed its existence in March 2026. After the last A1 and Q2 models left the production line, its sibling, the ID.3 Neo, is supposed to provide a fully electric entry into the premium compact car segment. To achieve this by the fall of 2026, the camouflaged prototypes had to drive a few test kilometers in various conditions.

In Lapland, the electric successor to the miracle fuel-efficient car from 2000 was sent for a test drive in the snow. On the mirror-smooth handling test track, the vehicle's dynamic characteristics were tested. It's a good thing that snow and ice always bring cold. This allowed the A2 e-tron to also test its temperature management and battery capacity and adapt them to Audi's requirements.
From the far north, we then returned to our home state of Bavaria. In the Altmühl Valley near Ingolstadt, the compact car faces uphill climbs, various road surfaces and sharp bends. Here, the suitability of the chassis and assistance systems for everyday use is tested in real-world traffic conditions.

Already in the first sketch, which shows the characteristic silhouette of the new A2, we could see a strictly aerodynamic approach in the spirit of its predecessor. The sharply sloping roof line was shown. In the wind tunnel of Audi's technical development department, its own work is constantly critically reviewed, tested and optimized.
Winds of up to 300 km/h, including a treadmill that reaches speeds of 235 km/h, are used to refine the aerodynamic properties, acoustic behavior and thermal stability of the smallest electric car from Ingolstadt.

The Audi A2 e-tron is also expected to be produced in Ingolstadt. The official presentation is, as already mentioned, planned for September 2026. Let's hope that the new model will better capture the spirit of the times than its namesake in entering the world of compact premium electric mobility.
