Audi Factory Museum in Ingolstadt showcases design legends

Design means a lot of work for (hopefully) successful forms. But sometimes also missed opportunities, as our readers from the "Forgotten Studies" column know. Now, an Audi exhibition in the factory's "museum mobile" in Ingolstadt offers a look at 50 years of design with the four rings logo.

In its new special exhibition “Legends of Design”, the Audi museum mobile presents a selection of spectacular concept vehicles and design studies from the last five decades. The exhibition will be on display from March 28 to July 12 – the exhibits, along with additional information, are also included in the Audi Tradition app.

Curator Stefan Felber explains: “It has been 20 years since the Audi museum mobile dedicated a special exhibition to the theme of design studies. Since then, our visitors have repeatedly asked for the exhibition to be held again – now it is finally time: concept cars such as the Audi quattro Spyder and Audi Avus quattro are once again on display in our museum, and they are joined by some studies that we have not yet hosted, such as the Audi e-tron Spyder and the Aztec.”

In addition to the concept cars, the exhibition also features special exhibits from Audi’s modeling department, offering insight into the creative design process. Sketches, renderings and clay models provide a glimpse into Audi’s creative workshop – “they show the designers’ ideas, their methods and the journey from vision to final form,” says Felber.

Overview of the exhibits of the new special exhibition:

  • Aztec from 1988
  • 1991 Audi quattro Spyder
  • Audi Avus quattro from 1991
  • Audi TT, a 1995 show car
  • Audi A8 Coupé, a concept car from 1997
  • Audi Steppenwolf from 2000
  • Audi Nuvolari quattro from 2003
  • Audi Shooting Brake concept from 2005
  • 2010 Audi e-tron Spyder
  • Audi quattro concept from 2010
  • Audi PB 18 e-tron from 2018

With the Audi Tradition app, you can take a piece of the Audi museum mobile home with you, and it also serves as a digital companion in the museum: visitors receive more detailed information about the vehicles on display in written form, and for selected models, also via an audio guide and even with a 360-degree panoramic view.

What you can't do on site, you can experience on your smartphone screen: get into the vehicle and take a look inside. The descriptions of the exhibits sometimes even include engine sounds. The app provides information on the exhibits of the special exhibition and the vehicles of the permanent exhibition. It provides access to the Audi Tradition website, the Audi Tradition online shop for accessories, literature and spare parts for young Audi classics, and the Audi Tradition social media on Instagram and TikTok.

Those interested can use the app to learn more about Audi's beginnings in Ingolstadt during a digital city tour in the footsteps of Auto Union - or about the history of the "Union Lido", the former "NSU Lido", and which vehicle from NSU history is on display at the campsite near Venice this season.

Finally, the app lists the most important events at which Audi Tradition presents classic cars from the company's history and shows what can be discovered at the current traditional exhibition on the second floor of the Audi Forum Neckarsulm. The free app can be downloaded from the usual app stores for smartphones with the iOS and Android operating systems.
