After the ID.3 Neo and ID. Polo, Volkswagen continues to develop the MEB+ platform. We already knew the VW ID. Cross as a disguised prototype. Now this electric car is becoming a serious thing. In Wolfsburg, the successful design of the T-Cross is being transferred to the electric future. It is not a revolution, but an extremely important series model that should prove itself with a powerful battery, a solid range and a reasonable price.
In terms of design, the VW ID. Cross remains true to the current “Pure Positive” line, which we already know from the ID. Polo. At the front, a closed crossbar stretches between the narrow headlights, which, depending on the equipment, is equipped with a luminous logo. That the internal combustion engine was the model is clearly visible from the trapezoidal front bumper. The distinctive LED light bar at the rear rounds off the design and offers optional 3D elements.
In side view, the car measures 4,15 meters long, 1,79 meters wide and 1,58 meters high. The wheelbase is 38 millimeters longer than the T-Cross. The black-trimmed "Flying Roof" and the slightly forward-sloping C-pillar add to the look. With a roof load capacity of 75 kilograms, this SUV is even suitable for a roof tent. The colors blue, red and green are also available.
Inside, the ID. Cross makes significant use of the advantages of abandoning the old internal combustion technology. With a luggage compartment volume of 475 liters, it surpasses the T-Cross by 20 liters. The 22-liter front luggage compartment under the hood is also perfect for storing a wet charging cable. At the front is a 10,25-inch display, which is optionally available in a charming retro look in the style of the Golf I. The central infotainment screen measures 12,9 inches.
VW is also re-introducing physical buttons on the steering wheel. There is now a separate row for the climate control with real, tactile buttons and a classic rotary volume control. Optionally, you can order a 425-watt Harman Kardon audio system or comfortable 12-way front seats with massage function.
This small SUV is driven exclusively via the front axle. The heart of the vehicle is a newly developed electric motor with the internal designation APP290. This motor is available in three power versions: 85 kW (116 PS), 99 kW (135 PS) and a whopping 155 kW (211 PS). The basic “Trend” version combines an 85 kW motor with a 37 kWh battery, which, according to the manufacturer, is sufficient for a range of a good 316 kilometers.
Those who want to travel longer distances without any worries can opt for the large battery with a capacity of 52 kWh combined with a power output of 155 kW. This version offers a range of 436 kilometers. Charging is fast: the smaller battery accepts up to 90 kW, which means a shorter charging time – around 27 minutes for a 10 to 80 percent charge. The larger version charges in just 24 minutes at a speed of up to 105 kW. All models charge with alternating current at a speed of 11 kW.
The chassis will also be interesting. To save costs and space, VW has combined a MacPherson front axle with a rear axle with compound arms. The new unified brake system promises significantly better braking feel and enables true one-pedal driving, in which the car slows to a complete stop simply by lifting the accelerator pedal. The package is rounded off by intelligent driving assistance systems such as “Travel Assist”, which recognizes red traffic lights.
The new “Vehicle-to-Load” function provides up to 3,6 kW of electricity to external devices such as electric bicycles. The price of the basic equipment starts at just under 28.000 euros. The more highly equipped versions include extras such as 18-inch alloy wheels, matrix headlights and automatic cruise control. Volkswagen is not yet disclosing the exact prices of the extras for the more highly equipped versions.
