Toto Wolff: Mercedes will not save Hockenheim

The head of the Silver Arrows team said Mercedes would not intervene to keep the race in Germany on the calendar for the 2020 season. This year, it was only a one-off affair.

All indications are that there will be a race for German GP the only one dropped out of the calendar Formula 1 season 2020. As new venues come in next year in Vietnam and on The Netherlands and because it is Mexico extended the contract, and the same is expected with Monzo in Barcelona, is thus the planned calendar for the 2020 season by Liberty Media with 22 races, full.

Hockenheim is with the leadership Formula 1 signed a one-year contract with the option to have the royal class race run next year as well. But this option has not been exercised as the organizers cannot find the money for the fee. For this year, they were helped by a car manufacturer from Stuttgart.

Mercedes only supported this year's race in Hockenheim because of the anniversary

"Last year's agreement was reached rather spontaneously. On Sunday morning we had a meeting with Chase and Sean who asked me if I would be able to help. After a good hour, we made an agreement to run the race for the German Grand Prix. However, this is not something we would continue in the future,”He explained Toto Wolff. "Mainly because I believe we should not interfere in the business of Liberty Media and Formula 1. They decide which race stays and which does not."

Wolff points out that Mercedes he did not want to be involved in advocating for a home race, despite his proximity to the company. “First of all, I believe it is very encouraging because there is so much interest in running the race. Liberty has a big problem as it has more demand than supply and that’s good, but also good for the teams, because we basically share a lot of the prize pool. And that’s where I’d like to end, because it’s a matter of Chase and his team where we’re going to race."

Toto Wolff explained that sponsoring this year’s race in Germany was a one-off act

Wolff he adds: "For us, racing in Germany is important because Daimler is a German company and there are a lot of family and friends there in Germany, but we must not interfere in their business. We can encourage them to look at the German race, but I repeat, Chase is the one who decides where we will go."
