Environmental theme: What do some racers say?

With his post on social media, Lewis Hamilton has sparked a controversy over environmental protection in Formula 1. Does the royal class of motorsport do enough in this area?

Fernando Alonso responded to Hamilton's announcement on environmental protection and the vegan diet and accused the Briton of hypocrisy. And how did some other racers react to this topic of environmental protection?

Sebastian Vettel: “We would be ignorant if we didn't pay attention to the environment, that's quite clear. As Lewis says, it’s hard to get acceptability from the outside because we don’t have exactly the smallest eco-friendly backpack. Races are all over the world and we have to travel. This is part of our service. Formula 1 should do more as a global operating platform. It should send a stronger message in this area. "

Max Verstappen: “I love petrol. Can I even say that? I don’t like these electrical things. I know that the environment is very important. But Formula 1 has existed since time immemorial and I don’t think we should exaggerate in reactions. I saw a documentary about the vegan diet. Interestingly, some athletes can increase their performance with this. But in Formula 1 it’s different than in cycling or running, where your body sets its limits. He enjoys being able to eat a burger sometimes. ”

Nico Hülkenberg: "That's not my beer."

Charles Leclerc: “This topic is extremely important. I think the whole world understands this and so do we as racers. Of course I try to do my best. It’s about smaller things, like not using plastic. I am opening a fashion company and making sure to use environmentally friendly materials. I will improve in areas where I believe we should have done better in the past. ”

Lewis Hamilton: “Yes, we travel around the world and drive Formula 1 race cars. Our ecological footprint is bigger than average. But that doesn’t mean we should be afraid to say the things we want to change. Formula 1 can do more. However, it has its own plan. That is why we need to put pressure on industry and Formula 1. ”

George Russell: “There are simple things we can do. If everyone agreed that there would be no more bottles in the paddock, this could be the right way to go. Many people say that Formula 1 is harmful. But racing is not the worst sport. ”
