JAMES ALLISON: More pressure on the ENGINES department this year

As the number of engine improvements is even more limited this year, Mercedes ’technical chief sees engineers in the field under particular pressure.

Although rules for the 2021 season allow only limited further development in some areas of the car, teams can be in the winter break freely develop their engines. However, the power units will be over the course of the season for the most part frozen, which will put producers under special pressure.

James allison, technical team leader Mercedes, emphasized: “While the engine department, as always, is trying to extract more capacity from the drive units, they will now have to do so in the context of existing rules, where there is less room for error.“Because if they had teams in season 2020 and before that each time the opportunity to perform per season three engine improvements, this space is now shrinking. “With each new drive, we were able to have a different design, hoping to create more performance,”Remember Allison.

James Allison, technical head of the Mercedes team, explains the rules of Formula 1 for the 2021 season.

A this year it will be otherwise. "In the 2021 season, however, we only have one more option to upgrade our engine. For this reason, we need to make sure that we put as much good as possible into this package of improvements, and we also put that on track, because we only have one attempt. And that really increases the pressure on the engine compartment, where they have to make sure we get the most out of this opportunity," Ends Allison.
