DOORNBOS: HAMILTON didn't get everything he wanted

Lewis Hamilton finally signed a new one-year contract with Mercedes this week, but according to Robert Doornbos, this was not the deal the Briton wanted.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has been the subject in recent months media circus, since it is his contract saga with the team Mercedes lasted longer than many expected. Only on Monday, February 8th, the 36-year-old finally signed a contract, albeit for only one year.

It was a lot views, why it took so long to come to an agreement. For example, there has been a lot of talk about it Hamilton wanted more moneythat he wants to have the right to choose a teammate, although it is Toto wolff, the head of the Mercedes team tried to deny these rumors. Nevertheless, he is a former Formula 1 racer robert doornbos convinced that the contract he signed Hamilton not what he wanted. A colleague from Motorsport.com said: “Both sides had to compromise anyway. I think Mercedes ultimately held its position and Hamilton didn’t get everything he wanted. I think Hamilton wanted to sign a multi-year contract and had to compromise on that."

Robert Doornbos (center) is convinced that Lewis Hamilton did not get everything he wanted with the new contract and that Mercedes is leaving open options for 2022.

In general assumptionthat a one-year contract is more appropriate team as a racer, as after the expiration of this contract at the end of this season, they can reassess their options, which certainly includes George Russell and maybe even Max Verstappen. He will have here Mercedes perhaps at the end of the year 2021 equation less if Hamilton decides to retire and Doornbos he believes that this could be a real possibility. “I can’t look into Lewis ’head, no one can, but he has seven championship titles and the number eight is definitely within reach. And he seems to still enjoy it. But on the other hand, Grosjean and I saw last year that these guys are still playing with their lives. In addition, Lewis may have other ambitions than Nico Rosberg, and he will suddenly decide to do something else."

The Dutchman also pointed out that Max Verstappen is one of Mercedes' options in 2022.

Doornbos He also shared his position on the possibility of Max Verstappen, who has a contract with the team Red Bull until the end of the year 2023, may land at before the end of his current contract Mercedes. "It will all depend on what Max will have this season. Mercedes is well aware of this, as well as Red Bull. Max will not go to Ferrari, but Mercedes would of course be another attractive option. Red Bull will have to do his best with Honda this year for Verstappen to fully fulfill his contract."
