Citroën GS Birotor: The Frenchman with a Wankel engine turned 50 years old

Only 847 examples of the vehicle were produced between 1973 and 1975.

The end of the sixties and in the early 1970s he was automotive world in the sign rotary motor. Many large companies have secured a license for Wankle engine, and in 1967, Citroën also started working with it. Citroën and NSU initially planned a shared car with Wankle engines, whereby it is NSU wanted to sell the German version, Citroën and French.

In 1967 have established a company for the production of engines comotor based in Luxembourg. This company was then acquired license for Wankel engines for road vehicles and established a factory in  Altforweiler in the federal state of Saarland. Initially, it was supposed to be there since the year 1973 produced every day 25 Wankel engines; the goal of production was 500 units per day, which would require further expansion of the factory. However, the enthusiasm suddenly stopped. After the Arab-Israeli war on a Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, the Arab oil producers ensured sobriety and aspirin in a glass of water. Around the same time, in the fall of 1973, it was Citroën presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt GS Birotor.

Citroen established a joint venture with NSU, Comotor, which obtained a license for Wankel engines to be installed in both brands.

His two-stroke Wanklov engine it offered completely because of its extremely smooth running and torque a new driving experience compared to a conventional engine Citroën GS. Internal name: KKM 624, further development of the unit from NSU Ro 80, but slightly weaker in strength 107 BAM in 137 Nm of torque. Other key data: 14 seconds to 100 km/h, maximum speed 175 km/h. Perfectly balanced Office desk it had no vibrations, so its noise level was extremely low right up to the highest speeds. Water cooled Wankle engine with two disks it had a relatively simple design with eight main elements: In addition to the two trochoids and the intermediate part that separates the two trochoids, he had Office desk two side parts front and rear, two rotating pistons, also known as rotors, and a crankshaft with two eccentrics.

Citroen introduced the GS Birotor at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973

Four stroke system it worked without valves, springs, levers, levers and camshafts. It's in the first beat fuel mixture and air entered through the intake opening. In the second stroke, the piston closed the intake port and so on squeezed the mixture. The sparks created by the spark plugs ignite the fuel mixture and air at the moment when the compression pressure is greatest. V third beat the expansion caused the piston to rotate and, due to the pressure forces acting on the surface of the piston, provided the necessary driving energy. In the fourth and last beat the piston released the outlet opening so that the burnt gases could flow out. comotor has failed as a joint project for years 1972, when it's VW withdrew from the contract which is NSU concluded with Citroën. comotor thus became the sole subsidiary Citroën, and the produced Wankel engine was fitted to the GS model.

But the end of this project was not only caused by the oil crisis, but the GS Birotor was also very expensive at the time at 14.500 German marks.

Change of situation on the market caused the premature collapse of the model Office desk: due to the energy crisis since the end of the year 1973 fuel consumption was at the fore. The factory is for compact Citroën GS Birotor provisions of good ones 14 liters per 100 kilometers. Perhaps this alone was not the decisive argument, but the high price: it was planned 14.500 German marks. For this price you could also get DS 20 automatic ali Mercedes 200, which is why Citroën, which was already in trouble at the time, stopped sales even before the start of sales, as it was believed that GS Birotor does not have good market opportunities. Between March 1974 and March 1975, only 847 Citroën's GS Birotor. Citroën later tried to buy back all the cars GS Birotor, in order to avoid the supply of spare parts. Despite this decision, there are still approx 250 Birotor vehicles.
