Verstappen: Leclerc deserved a penalty

That Leclerc received only a fine in Hockenheim because the team sent him on after a stop at the wrong time, Max Verstappen believes, was not fair.

In the end, it made no difference for Leclerc, as the Ferrari racer resigned after 27 laps. But even before the young Monaco flew off the track, it was very tricky in the pits. After changing wheels, the Ferrari team sent their racer forward at the wrong time, leading to a tricky situation. It is only thanks to the good reaction of Romain Grosjean that it is to be thanked that there was no collision. The ombudsmen imposed a fine after consideration. Ferrari will have to pay 5.000 euros to the FIA box office.

This, however, did not meet with approval from competitors. Max Verstappen, the winner of the last race in Hockenheim, said at the Hungaroring: “This decision is wrong. If teams receive fines instead of a time bonus, then everyone will start with that. I don’t think that’s fair, ”says the Dutchman, who was given a five-second mark-up penalty in Monaco because the team sent him forward at the wrong time and collided with Bottas as a result. “It would also not be fair to say that I received this punishment in Monaco only for colliding with him. In both cases, the team will send you forward at the wrong time. ”

Then Max asks the gathered journalists: “What was the punishment? 5.000 euros? For the team, it’s a trifle. Of course, it will not be difficult for them to pay this amount. For this reason, it is wrong for me to impose such a penalty, especially in terms of security. That's not right. " The 21-year-old goes on to say that this punishment was also the subject of discussion at a meeting of team bosses and they all came to the same conclusion. "I think they, too, have realized that this is not the way to go."
