This defeat in the last race before the summer break is especially bitter. The best Ferrari is on Hungaroring brought 62 seconds behind the winner to the finish line Lewis Hamilton. This time there was nothing to do with tactics Mercedesabecause Lewis had to get everything out of his car to catch the lead three laps before the end Max Verstappen and managed to win. This led to a huge backlog to third place Sebastian Vettl, who was certainly not on Sunday’s ride at the Hungaroring.
Martin Brundle, a former racer Formula 1 and at the time an expert commentator for British television Sky, notes: "Ferrari was simply too slow. In the front, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were so far apart that they were already in second place to some extent. The only reason Sebastian Vettel managed to reach the podium is that in the first stint he was on a medium mix of tires for a long time and then they changed him into soft tires. This allowed Vettl to overtake his teammate Leclerc."
Brundle continues: “Leclerc was very self-critical after qualifying and also after the race. He shamelessly pointed out where he needed to improve. This time, in the qualifiers, he indulged in a spin and a close encounter with the guardrail, causing his car to be damaged. That cost him a better spot at the start. After the race, Leclerc found that he put too much strain on his tires in the first stint, so Vettl managed to stay on the track twelve laps longer. Leclerc has to work on these mistakes."
In Brundle further notes: "Red Bull Racing is slowly approaching Ferrari in association with Honda in the team championship. At the same time, the Italians still have the advantage - 288: 244 in points - but if there will be another racer Red Bullbut managed to constantly score points, then Ferrari is in danger."
