Spa-Francorchamps: Statements of the first three qualifiers

Charles Leclerc, who won his third pole position in his career, was of course extremely happy. Slightly less his team-mate Sebastian Vettel and third-placed Lewis Hamilton were pleased with the third-place finish, as his mechanics did a little miracle by patching up his race car until qualifying.

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari - 1st place"It was very important for me to get some space on the track. I also told this to my people. It wasn’t important to me to head to the track at the end, it was important that I had some space. And it worked well. Today, it was very difficult to get the car ready for the fast lap because everyone was trying to gain some space for themselves. I was constantly looking for a hole. My round didn’t start well because I drove La Source poorly. The rest of the round, however, was good. We had problems on long distances on Friday, so no one should draw conclusions for tomorrow's race too quickly, because both Ferraris are in the front row. But today's speed gives us hope that we will be well on our way in tomorrow's race as well. It’s nice to be seven tenths of a second ahead, but it was very tricky. This traffic was amazing. But I would never expect such an advantage. We have been very fast here since the first training session, but it will not be easy on Sunday. I’m not sure we’ll be that fast tomorrow."

Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari - 2nd place: "I can be happy that I even got into the first starting lineup. Because it was really crowded out there. However, I don’t want that to sound like an excuse. I caught a good rhythm, but in the third part of the qualifiers, everyone was trying to find some hole or lee. And here these tires cool down quickly. What encourages me is the fact that the feeling in the car is better than on Friday, as I am much more satisfied with the balance. It’s going to be colder on Sunday, so I don’t know how that’s going to affect our form. In both of my attempts, I was too close to the rivals, in which case you can only lose. It has no clear path and the tires fall out of the optimal operating window. The fundamental problem is that we are constantly in this narrow temperature window because of the tires and if you fail to do that, then you are having problems. It used to be different because the tires were different too."

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - 3rd place: "The third free practice was horrible for me. It hurts when you know how many people are busy with these parts for the car and how hard they work to get the car back together. But the guys did their best, which makes me very grateful to them and I wanted to give it back to them with good qualifications. Before we set off on the fast lap, it was very slow as everyone wanted to keep the breeze of the car in front of them. The team did everything right. As everyone slowed down, however, it became really tricky. We haven’t been so slow this year yet and today it was even a bit dangerous. I couldn’t just wrap up on the grass. With that, I was trapped behind Valtteri and Hülkenberg. Today was tricky, but Ferrari did its job well anyway. Charles was extremely strong today. Now I just hope we can get something started over longer distances. We know that Ferrari is usually not strong in races, so I hope we could achieve a great result with an interesting strategy."
