WOLFF: I hope FORMULA 1 has learned to avoid oversized EXCURSION ZONES

Toto Wolff, head of the Mercedes team, says Formula 1 should learn from the racetracks that have been added to this year’s racing calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic.

formula 1 visited for the first time this year Mugello in Portimao, while she also returned to the track after a long absence Nurburgring in Imola. The racers mostly praised these tracks, mainly because these are old school racetracks that have a lot of sand and grass.

But in the first draft of the calendar season 2021, we are looking for these racetracks in vain. However Wolff she believes she should formula 1 learn from paths that have received much praise. “I've always been very loud about it because I don't agree with the direction we've taken when racing in the big car parks of shopping malls, as it takes away the racer's factor and especially his skill," he said Wolff. "That is why I really like racing in Imola and Mugello and on the tracks where you are punished for a mistake. I think we need to bring back the sand barriers to ensure that when you leave the track you can’t get back on the track without damaging the car."

For Toto Wolff, racing in Imola was something extraordinary and the Austrian hopes that the Formula 1 dignitaries will take a step away from the large car parks and return again to the more sandy excursion zones.

Team boss Mercedes continues: “I think we can adapt most racetracks to that standard, but these classic tracks will always have a soul. Many new racetracks do not have this, perhaps Bahrain, as we have been racing in this country for many years. But maybe we really should adjust the racetracks the way I described earlier. However, I am not a racetrack designer, I only give feedback as a former racer and based on what we have been able to see on television in Mugello, Portimao and Imola."
