Luca DE MEO: “BOTER” ALONSO has to take the ALPINE team to the top

Two-time champion Fernando Alonso is struggling with a lot of weight on his shoulders this season, as the Alpine team reckons that with the help of his experience and knowledge, they will break through to the top again.

In an interview with Top Gear is the CEO Renault, Luca de Meo spoke about Alpine’s long-term goals in Formula 1 after the team renamed itself before the season. “Our goal is long-term participation in Formula 1, and an important factor is also Fernando Alonso, from whom we expect him to help us reach the very top. ”

"Renault is Fernando's home, but we expect him to use his experience to help the team grow," he says of Meo and adds: “It has a completely different role than it did fifteen years ago. Today, he has a more godly role, and I expect him to think and have an attitude that will allow us to progress towards the top. I know he was born a winner and I want him to pass that on to the team. ”

Luca de Meo has high hopes for Fernando Alonso and the 2022 season.

“We want to focus on preparing a race car for him to have fun in. At the race itself, you never know what’s going to happen. We may also need a bit of luck, but I assure you that we will do everything we can - for him and for Esteban, ” he adds Renault's first husband.

Although Alpine team this year it will not be able to compete for the top places, which they themselves admit, the French have for 2022 season ambitious plans, and budget constraints are expected to contribute to their success: “The best teams spend two to three times as much money as we do. I believe that due to the budget constraints, the teams will be closer together and that we will see a more interesting Formula 1. ”
