Forgotten Studies: Nissan Chapeau Concept (1989)

It was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show and looked like a telephone booth.

More than 30 years was at the car show in Tokyo in 1989 it is possible to admire some extravagant ones Nissan vehicles. The Japanese manufacturer presented a whole series special concepts, designed by the stylists of the Pike factory – Figaro, BE-1, Pao, Rasheen in Chapeau. Some of them later became serial models, while others remained unusual design experiments. Just like Chapeau.

A phone on wheels

Unique proportions, pink color and giant cockpit: Chapeau it will definitely not leave you cold. It's a design really unusual. With an almost vertical windshield and box body, which is somewhere between a kei car, a van and a minivan. And which somehow reminds us of the old phone booth.

You can also stand in this Nissan concept with peace of mind.

Unfortunately, we don't have the exact ones dimensions of this concept, but according to the descriptions at the time, the large back with large glasses made it possible they stand comfortably. The central element Chapeau - according to the artists who designed it - it is phone. Aha. So we weren't completely wrong with our idea.

Its advantage is practicality

Because of the strangeness of it Nissan it is not surprising that the concept it did not follow the serial model. It impresses above all with its practicality, as it has a voluminous back like a real van. It is intended for installation exhibition spaces or transport of goods.

Po form is therefore a kind of "hybrid” between several segments. Drive assembly but it's a different story. Although data is sparse, we know it is Chapeau drove 1,5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, which probably did not provide maximum efficiency due to the aerodynamic shape of the car. And what do you think? We would like to see production version of this prototype?
